Friday night and Newcastle
Jonny Evans was the latest rag to have a go. Apparently if we don’t win the title this year we’ll fade away just like when Liverpool finished second a few years ago. Keep believing the hype Jonny, no-one else does. Tosser.
Spent all day Wednesday chatting to Gary James and looking through my memorabilia stuff some of which Gary will be using in his forthcoming book as advertised in KK196.
Gary’s doing a piece on KOTK in the QPR programme hopefully, so there’s something else to look forward to (or not!)
So after the euphoria of Monday night, and don’t forget a couple of weeks ago we were dreading them fluking the title here so that didn’t happen, and we’ve got the Manc bragging rights whatever happens.
Newcastle mean while are getting cocky after the win at worn out Chelsea with Cisse’s goals. Everyone is warning us that it won’t be easy as if we hadn’t already figured that. Well it won’t be easy for Newcatle either. Newcy v City is always a big game for me as I came in at the 1955 cup Final. There’s been some great tussles over the years. 1968 is the one though. United beat them 6-1 at the swamp the week before the game and the headline was “this team won’t beat the new Champions” The game itself was a nerve shredder from start to finish but we got there in the end. I remember giving Les Lloyd a big kiss and a hug after the game. Les is on the back row of our team second from the right on page 11of the Ua and Them book. I've never seen him since, can't understand why!.
Let’s hope for a similar result on Sunday and that Swansea don’t lie down at the cesspit and concede too many goals. Here’s the it’s A Fix extract :
37) SUNDAY MAY 6Th NEWCASTLE (AWAY) KO 1.30 PM
Put back to the Sunday so as not to clash with the Cup Final, unlike last season.
Second season back in the Prem. Last, and only pot since they beat us in the FA Cup final in 1955 is the 1969 Inter Cities Fairs Cup. They moan about getting to Cup Finals and having to play the top team unlike us and Stoke. Well boys, to get to the Cup final praps you have to play the top team in the semi-final and beat them. Recent connection is Shay Given. This is the 152nd League meeting.
This season so far : At the Etihad in November it was a 3-1 win for City, Balotelli (41 pen) Richards (44) Aguero (72pen) with Gosling getting a consolation goal for Newcastle in the 89th minute. Crowd was 47,408 with only 1685 Geordies (where were you….).
Currently they’re a magnificent 5th in the table with 65 points from 35 games and 11 wins 5 draws and 2 losses at home and are certs to be in Europe next season, maybe even the Champs league much to Robbie Savage’s dismay, and possibly ours!
In the Carling Cup they beat Scunthorpe 2-1 aet away, then Forest away aet 4-3, but lost at Blackburn 3-4 aet
In the FA Cup they beat Blackburn 2-1 at home but lost 0-1 away at Brighton.
Our form at Newcastle : Up there last season in late December it was a 3-1 City win, Barry (2) and Tevez (5) giving us a good start but Carroll netting (72) giving us the jitters until Carlos made it 3-1 ( 81) Crowd was 51, 635 with 2,808 Blues.
Prior to the 2-2 draw in 09/10, since our promotion in 2003, we’d won the last two and lost the previous four. So in the last 4 we’ve won 3 and drawn one.
Usual wind up (and they brought f*ck all to The Etihad) which really gets up their nose is “where were you….” Though the cheeky sods now sing it back to us? And we WERE here! A new one is “There’s only one St James’ Park – Exeter!” Or how about “There’s only one Magpies – Notts County!”
Comment: They are still the surprise team of the season, Alan Pardew, a flop at West Ham, Charlton and Southampton is doing an amazing job and has made some shrewd buys. Cisse (as suggested as a City target by Concannon in a previous KK) is class, Ben Arfa too after recovering from Nige’s tackle and Demba Ba are the danger men and Krol looks solid in goal. Who’s their Chief scout? Ex Blueman Graham Carr, father of Alan but don’t hold it against him! They took 4 points off the rags and were unlucky at O/T when united scored from a free kick that never was to draw 1-1
Memories of the last game of the season there in 1968, when we took the title 4-3 are still fresh in many Blues minds , but all we can ask for today is 100% effort and a great game of football, hopefullya win against the Prem’s current form team. We must grab the lifeline and we must be the 12th man. Bring the noise.
Sports Direct Arena (St. James’ Park)
Capacity : 52,387 (3,000 for City)
Groundwise: No change to the magnificent, but lop-sided St James’s Park since our last visit, we’re housed in the corner of the Sir John Hall Stand, Level 7, where you’ll still need oxygen to reach that level. Tickets are £42.
WWTWTWShite? Crowds averaged 16,001 in 1980/81 and are up to 49,660 this.
Away day Zines: The Mag – swaps with KOTK – very profession, and sells loads as does True Faith, and Talk Of The Tyne.
Sat Nav : NE1 4ST
Plenty of pubs, on street parking and local car parks.
The rags play Swansea at the Swamp 4PM KO I think
C’mon City
Apparently theree is a big problem wih Amazon at the moment so the KK197 e-zine won't be up until next week which is very disappointing after all the work put in to convert it.. So apologies for that, sorry, out of our hands
Dave
As an instant put-down for those wonderfully loyal Man City fans, ask them what the attendance was for their game against Mansfield on 5th December, 1998. If they tell you it was more than 3,007 then they are lying.... (658 were away fans). They then crammed in a whopping 8,595 (1,143 away fans) a week later for an FA Cup replay against Darlington....
ReplyDeleteTo be fair to Man City they have a pretty decent attendance record in the league in the last 30 odd years. In fact, it is amazingly similar to Newcastle's which makes it all the more ridiculous that they sing the "Where Were You" song more than anyone.
However, after delving deep, it brings us immense pleasure to report that between the years of 1963 and 1965, years of generally large football attendances, Manchester City were sh*t, and Maine Road was empty:
63/64 Season - 12 matches below 20,000, six below 15,000, one below 10,000, including:
8,053 17/3/64 Middlesbrough Div 2
11,060 21/12/63 Rotherham Div 2
11,411 22/2/64 Grimsby Div 2
11,908 7/3/64 Derby Div 2
64/65 Season - only 4 matches ABOVE 20,000, TEN below 15,000 and two below 10,000, including:
8,015 16/1/65 Swindon Div 2
8,409 28/4/65 Charlton Div 2
10,215 14/10/64 Newcastle United! Div 2
10,470 20/2/65 Southampton Div 2
10,804 17/4/65 Coventry City Div 2
10,929 31/4/65 Plymouth Div 2
Now if that isn't "playing regularly in front of 10,000" I don't know what is. Then Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison took over and it all took off again.
Also, 1970 European Cup Winners Cup Final (held in Austria) - 10,000. Very poor.
In recent times we managed to dig out a couple of 15,000 crowds from the 1987/88 season. Other than that, it's the League Cup and the tin pots where they look bad. And if they try and tell you the League Cup is a tin pot, just remind them how excited they were when some mackem fell over backwards and the ball bounced in off his shin pad at Wembley in 1976.
Main competitions

Yes and your gates have always been 50000+ haven't they? As far as the 60's gates you are referring to go, I accept that they were low but it was at a time when United were riding a crest of success whilst we were at our lowest point. Attendances soon recovered once Allison and Mercer put us back on track. In the 1980's along with every otrher club including yours, gates shrank due to a major recession, hooliganism and in our case two relegations. But I notice the games you have mentioned are all in the League Cup or silly cups which most folk treated as low priority. The attendance for the Norwich game in 1995 was 21031 at a time when our Kippax stand was being rebuilt, our capacity was actually 22000 at that time and as the stand was built the capacity increased untill we reached the new ground capacity of 27000. Even the Manchester derby of that yuear only attracted 26500 due to the limited capacity. The difference between our two clubs is that Newcastle don't share a city with one of the biggest clubs in the world. Considering that fact, I feel we hold our own with regards support.

ReplyDeleteJust noticed you mention the ECWC Final in Vienna in 1970, which just about confirms how poor your research was. For the record in the 1970 European Cup Winners Cup Final we faced Eastern European opposition at a time when it was impossible for Eastern block citizens to leave their homelands unless they were friends of some government official. So Gornik fans in the Prata Stadium could be counted on two or three hands. The game was played in the furthest outpost of what was then Western Europe, making travel extremely difficult and expensive for our fans. The game was played in a stadium with no roof and in conditions that were as close to warranting an abandonment as you could possibly get. The game was shown live on Austrian national TV which along with the conditions, discouraged many local people from attending the game. Added together these facts resulted in our final holding the record as the worst attended final in European Cup football history, but that wasn't because of poor support. In fact had the game been played on a two leg basis, I feel certain there would have been 60000 at the Maine Rd leg. Even if the game had been played at a neutural ground in say Spain, the game would have attracted 40000 plus and had it been against Western European opposition the gate would have been nearer 60000. You guys were lucky in that your last pot, way back in the days of black and white TV was a two legged affair. How many geordies travelled to Budapest?
ReplyDeleteI withdrew my initial irate response because on reflection, I could understand why the Geordie took umbrage. I do rate Newcastle fans who, like us have had very little to cheer but have remained loyal. I've actually felt something of an affinity in this respect and the fact they've had to put up with almost as much media piss taking as us in recent years.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with Tony that the stats he has produced are misleading.
I used to feel we had an affinity with many clubs Glyn. Everton, Newcastle, Chelsea, Tottenham. All big clubs who have always been overshadowed by their local rivals or in Newcastle's case bad luck and poor judgement. Everyone remembers Kevin Keegan's rant at Ferguson in 96 and blames it for Newcastle blowing a 15 point lead, but no one mentions the fact that what caused the rant was Ferguson's disgraceful accusation that Leeds wouldn't try. But since our good fortune, I have grown sick and tired of the jealousy from fans of those type of clubs who think it should have been them. Remember the Everton fans response to an inocous comment on this board two years ago? What exactly have City fans done in the last two years to make everyone have a dig such as Geordies above? Are we arrogant? I don't think so. Are we big headed? No. Do we brag and belittle other clubs? No way. A United supporting friend of mine warned me three years back he said "now you guys have money and when you become succesful, you had better get used to everyone ganging up on you"
ReplyDeleteAnd you have both made my point. The stats can be manipulated to suit either side. We are both well supported clubs despite the lack of silverware as compared with others. We have both had our poor gates for whatever reasons but they are the numbers that the "WWYWYWS" spewers harp on. On the whole, both clubs have great fan bases and support their teams regardless of the dross served up at times by mismanagement, poor teams, etc.
ReplyDeleteI take your point about the 2-club city, but Manchester has twice the population of Newcastle so there is greater catchment area to gain support from. Greater Manchester is bigger again and I'm sure not all your supporters reside in Manchester alone. We are in the same boat as we have the Mackems just a stones throw down the road competing for a fan base. At the end of the day, I was just trying to show that we are both well supported clubs who have had lean patches with attendances. After all, we've both had reduced capacities due to ground changes, mass unemployment which impacted attendances, and the lack of investment in both clubs to stifle growth.
All I was trying to show is that we aren't much different when it comes to supporting our club. I would be happy to see the blue half of Manchester break the monopoly of the Red Shite this season (but hopefully not at our expense) and harbour no jealousy to your recently found investment and good fortune. No club would say no to that so more power to you but just remember where you came from and that we aren't that much different if you really dig deep and have a look.
Maybe that's one of the reasons I'd be happy to see you win it this season. Gives teams like us hope!
Fair play Geordie boy and I would prefer you to make the champions league ahead of Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea. But it looks as though one of us will be disapointed, you beat us and you'll stop us winning the league. Draw and we could both be losers. If we beat you and Tottenham win, they'll pip you for the CL place. From my experience City and Newcastle fans have always had a decent relationship. I wasn't there but I'm told that in 1968 Newcastle fans celebrated with us when we beat United to the championship. Football genuinely needs ten teams who all have a chance of winning the premiership but FFP will ensure that can never happen.
ReplyDeleteRegarding Geordies comment about not forgetting where we came from, I know that regular fans will not allow the kind of arrogance and billy big balls attitude that permeates from OT. If I start acting that way then I hope someone gives me a good slap. In the meantime I am going to sit back and enjoy the ride. Good luck to the geordies for a CL spot but hopefully you will have to rely on Spuds slipping up.
ReplyDeleteTony, the reason I said I could see why Geordie took umbrage was that the "It's a fix" does kinda ask for it. I think the ensuing comments just show how football debate should be conducted, nothing like the bile spewed out by the Toffee's that time!
ReplyDeleteHope we win today and the Magpies win 4th spot NEXT week!
Congrats lads and well deserved win for you today. Not quite shades of '68 but you got what you needed. We gave it a go but hats off to a great City side. Will fully expect you to finish the job next week and lift the title.
ReplyDeleteAll the best!
Immense performance from City. Hart, Lescott, Kompany and YaYa - words cannot describe how good they were.
ReplyDeleteI worked that out after a while Glyn when Geordie mentioned later about how statistics can be twisted. I don't think the WWYWYWS stats are meant to have a go at other clubs but I can see how some folk would take it that way. What can I say about today's game? Newcastle gave us more trouble than Man U did over two games. Lescott and Kompany had fantastic games and Ya Ya will finaly winb round those blues who still complain about his work rate.
ReplyDeleteHa ha thought we were magic and the pics of the fans after the 1st goal were priceless. I think Clichy has been absolutely superb in the last 5 games - a real unsung hero.
ReplyDeleteWas slightly disappointed in the Newcastle fans transformation into Stoke fans by booing every time we had the ball. I just don't get how anyone can get any enjoyment out of it.

ReplyDeleteYou should hear the Arsenal fans complaing "what we have done is criminal" on Talksport
ReplyDeleteWas that the Newcastle fan who put a brick through my windscreen after we beat them in the League Cup in 95?
ReplyDeleteProbably not, but then again, his arguement seems far too researched and rehearsed.
If he is a Newcastle fan he neglects to mention that it's a lot easier to be loyal when your nearest rivals are Sunderland rather than United.
Re the Arsenal fans: The Champions League was designed to make the rich clubs richer and the time to complain was twenty years ago.
I heard that too, tony. pathetic
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget the big five's threat in the early 80's to break away unless they were allowed to keep ALL of the gate money from home games. Something that actually helped us when we were relegated in '83
ReplyDeleteI never knew that Oliver Holt is Emily Bishop's son. However, that's about as relevant as City's crowd against Mansfield in 1998 for a competition that Joe Royle made his intentions quite clear from the outset.
ReplyDelete
